Robo-Babies Crawl Out of Your Nightmares & Into Reality

We like robots that play soccer, save wildlife, and clean our stuff. We’re not, however, particularly fond of robots who look like extras in horror movies. Such are M3-Kindy and Noby, a pair of bots recently shown at the JST Erato Asada Project symposium in Japan, both designed to study human development by basically pretending to be babies.

Kindy can walk and display emotion, using his stereoscopic vision and speech recognition to determine the effect of his feigned sadness on the weak-willed humans who hold his hand as he walks. Don’t fall for the trap….

Update: Friday 10:45 a.m. To include comments from Google. It’s doubtful that they would admit it, but U.S. studio chiefs and music moguls must dream that their country will one day elect a president like Nicolas Sarkozy.

…it will prove that he is an unprincipled and unethical crook sitting in the driver’s seat of the entire nation.

Oh, wait a minute. I guess he has a lot of company on that last point. Like this Reply to this comment 3 people like this comment by mbertwave January 8, 2010 12:19 PM PST Socialism at its finest. Can you imagine having government assigned cards for purchasing music? Or effectively socializing the entertainment industry? To my American sensibilities this is just creepy.Having said that, I absolutely agree with the French that content should be playable on any device. What Apple does with iTunes and the iPod should be illegal. TVs That Will Suck Hollywood Into the 3rd Dimension [Pics]

…Donning dorky glasses, Consumer Electronics Show attendees crowded into the booths of Sony, Panasonic, LG, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Samsung last week to gaze into the big-screen 3-D TVs on display. Wired.com toured the show floor to compile a photographic montage of the biggest 3-D TVs we could find.
Video companies are optimistic that 3-D TV will be huge this year. But would you buy one? Would you be into the idea of wearing ugly glasses to watch a 3-D football game after a long day of work?

Before you contemplate the answer, it’s important to gain a clear understanding of what specifically defines a 3-D TV and what you need for a full experience. The 3-D TVs at CES all varied in different ways, but most of them shared some fundamentals. In order to display a full-frame image in 3-D, you need an extremely high frame rate, so usually the TV must be capable of a 240-Hz refresh rate. The TV also needs to support HDMI 1.4, the latest generation of HDMI, which will transmit the massive amount of data…
