Google in talks with major studios to rent movies via YouTube

The Financial Times is reporting that Google is in talks with major Hollywood studios to bring streaming movie rentals from their catalogs to YouTube by the end of the year. Citing multiple sources with knowledge of the plans, the FT claims that the YouTube on-demand video service will probably launch first in the US, and will offer movies, simultaneous with the DVD release, for about $5. The movies won’t be downloadable, so you’ll need a live Internet connection to watch them.

…Unbeknownst to most users, YouTube has actually been offering streaming movie rentals from a number of smaller studios since January. YouTube then began quietly expanding the service to a wider number of content partners, adding not just indie films but some major movie releases to its catalog. What will launch later in the year, then, will presumably be a version of the service with most or all of the major studios on board….

The Internet’s 5 Billionth Device Will Soon Go Live

According to IMS, the internet will see its five billionth device plugged in sometime this month – I would presume, of course, that their projection excludes the possibility of any humanity-extinguishing catastrophes.

…You never really sit and think that there could be someone out there, actually keeping track of the internet. That there’s a man or, more likely, collection of men, and by all rights probably some women, too sitting around, crunching numbers and tabulating all the internets of the world. If there is such an entity, it is undeniably IMS Research, who have been tracking the installed base of internet-ready equipment for some time.
So what’s the big news? According to IMS, the internet will see its five billionth device plugged in sometime this month I would presume, of course, that their projection excludes the possibility of any humanity-extinguishing catastrophes.
Seriously, though, guys. 5 billion. That’s a lot of goddamn computers, to say the least. And IMS brings up some interesting points of data, too. Currently, only about 1 billion of those devices are computers. Smartphones are already squashing that total, and then you’ve got things to take into account like TVs, tablets, cameras, and pretty much any…

How To Improve Your Android Phone’s Battery Life

Whether it’s a lowly T-Mobile G1 or the latest Motorola Droid X, here’s how to get the most out of your Android-powered cell phone’s battery.

…THE best way is to invest in a bigger battery my iIncredible would go for 4 hours. Now it will go for DAYS with everything turned on!! Only drawback is trying to find cases, docks, etc for the larger form factor, but I would not go back to small size. It is truly function of form and this wins hands down….

Malfunctioning iPod Brought a Tokyo Subway Train To A Halt

An unidentified, malfunctioning iPod brought a Tokyo subway train to a halt for an eight minutes during this morning’s rush hour.

…is caused by suppliers cutting corners.

Or it could be poorly designed product. No, can’t be that. Must be the suppliers.

But where is Apple’s Quality Control? Before the products are made, Apple should be testing the supplies to make sure they meet their specifications. You don’t just do that once, go “OK, all’s good” and then build 5 billion of the things. You test all the time.

You would think after all the laptop battery problems that this issue would not occur again,

Why would you think that? How long did it take Apple to fix the laptop battery issue? Well, never, actually, until they redesigned the MacBookPro. (And those haven’t been around long enough to make people sure they aren’t going to start expanding as well).

but cheaper supplies from China seem to find a way to buck trends. I mean, where else can you buy a harmless product like toothpaste and find antifreeze as an ingredient?

Yeah, and how did that get released? Because…

Smartphones lead mobile sales, Android moves into no. 3 spot

Android has eclipsed iOS and is creeping up on RIM as smartphone sales continue their strong growth.

…Mobile handset sales continued their global growth last quarter thanks largely to the increased sales of smartphones. According to data from analytics firm Gartner, smartphone sales were up over 50 percent year-over-year for a total of 61.6 million units sold, with the top four OS vendors accounting for 91 percent of the worldwide smartphone OS market.

Handset sales in general grew by 13.8 percent during the second quarter of 2010 compared to 2009, with smartphones making up 19 percent of overall device sales. Gartner noted that new products from Apple, HTC, and Motorola helped boost the numbers, and predicted that the launches of updated operating systems would keep growth going throughout the rest of 2010.

The top four smartphone OSes were Symbian (41.2 percent), RIM (18.2 percent), Android (17.2 percent), and iOS (14.2 percent), with Android phones eclipsing iOS devices during the quarter and taking the number three spot away from Apple. This is not all that surprising, given…
