RIM Must Switch To Android Now, Before It’s Too Late

RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 operating system and apps platform still isn’t in the same league as its arch rivals, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. So it’s time for RIM to make a difficult, but important move: Stop… RIM’s greatest assets are its email service but no one who buys BlackBerry products actually cares about the BlackBerry OS.

…RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 operating system and apps platform still isn’t in the same league as its arch rivals, Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android. So it’s time for RIM to make a difficult, but important move: Stop wasting time developing its own operating system and apps platform, and switch the BlackBerry to Android. The sooner, the better, before it’s too late. As Wall Street is starting to figure out, RIM still doesn’t have a credible answer to the iPhone or Android. While RIM is still selling plenty of BlackBerry devices — thanks to international expansion and big sales at carriers — it’s not a software leader anymore. As a result, RIM is losing the high-end of the smartphone market to Google and Apple, and risks becoming a low-end, low-margin player, or worse. RIM is the new Palm, in a sense. And don’t forget what happened to Palm, even after it miraculously created a decent new OS from scratch. (The sad twist of irony is that RIM could have bought Palm and its solid new WebOS platform, before it…

Supercool Superpowered Shark Submarine

The Seabreacher X is an amazing boat/submarine/shark-thingy which has been dubbed the ultimate millionaire’s toy, and it’s not hard to see why.

Crashing at the bottom of a lake is something nobody would want to do. Blinding laser beam newest police tool

Police agencies from around Puget Sound got a pitch Wednesday on a new weapon that can blind a suspect short term with a giant laser beam. The promoters claim the lasers are effective day or night, and are designed to be effective anywhere from 3 feet to a mile-and-a-half away from a suspect - without causing eye damage.

…But with deadly force used only as a last resort, police are constantly testing less-than-lethal weapons that can be used to stop perpetrators without putting officers at risk. Over the years, this has included everything from tasers and pepper spray to bean bag guns and net guns, which recall visions of Spiderman when they are launched.
One of the newest and most unusual less-than-lethal weapons to hit the market is the “Dazer Laser.” It s a powerful laser gun that can temporarily blind and disorient a suspect with a large modulating pool of green light.
“If you can impair their vision where they can t effectively target or locate you, you’re controlling them, you have those couple seconds you need, which in law enforcement is a year,” said Ryan Battis, who demonstrates the weapons to police departments for Laser Energetics, Inc. of New Jersey.
The Dazer Laser is being pitched to police across the Northwest as a safe alternative to tasers, which can cause burns, or pepper spray, which has to be deployed…

How the White House uses the iPad

The folks who gather early every morning in the West Wing office of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel have something new in common these days. Practically everyone has an iPad — or will have one very soon.

…Emanuel just got his, as did senior adviser David Axelrod and deputy press secretary Bill Burton. Both communications director Dan Pfeiffer and press wrangler Ben Finkenbinder have one on order. Economic adviser Larry Summers takes his to staff meetings.

The device is the hot, new White House toy, a gizmo that is popping up around Washington but seems to be particularly in vogue at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

But the big question is: What’s on your iPad? So we asked.

Summers has the Bloomberg app for financial information, says adviser Matt Vogel. Also Scrabble. And the first book he downloaded was a free copy of “The Federalist Papers,” Vogel says. (It turns out that “Tax Policy and the Economy,” Volume 4, by Lawrence H. Summers, isn’t available on Apple’s iBooks store.)

Burton, who has been a bit of an iPad evangelist at the White House, has the app for Vanity Fair magazine, Scrabble, a news app and the entire last season of ABC’s “Lost.”

“I was going to watch on our way to Indonesia,” he wrote a day…
